(“About the Contemporary. Languages, practices and phenomena of 21st century art”)
10 meetings that will virtually occupy a critical space in which to reflect on contemporary art in relation to new technologies, through the voices of the authors and artists involved.
The meetings, scheduled on Fridays at 18 from January 8 to March 26, 2021, have a duration of 1 hour and include the participation of critics and artists.
Scheduled for today, Friday, January 15, at 18 the meeting with:
- Marco Mancuso, critic, curator and director of “Digicult”.
- Emilio Vavarella, artist and researcher at Harvard University.
Coordinated by Laura Barreca, director of mudaC.
There is a lot of talk about Artificial Intelligence and systems for automation, interpretation and analysis of large amounts of data and information.
Machine-learning systems and their possible integration with different areas of scientific and biotechnological research are increasingly present and invasive in our lives and will have an increasing impact on the relationship between man and machine and on our society.
Beyond all too easy utopias or dystopias, it is important to learn to consciously dialogue with these tools, according to new models of behavior and new languages.
Where can we take inspiration for the construction of these models?
Which ethical elements should we keep in mind and which are the possible poetics and artistic investigations that develop around these practices?
What strategies can be adopted by the art world for the creation of a conscious relationship with the public and what is the role of institutions?
These are the issues that will be discussed with Emilio Vavarella, an artist whose work examines the relationship between subjectivity, non-human creativity and technological power, and Marco Mancuso, critic and researcher, who has been interested for years in the relationship between technological and scientific research, on the border between art, design and contemporary culture.
The meeting is inspired by and continues the reflection between the two experts already started last December within the cycle of meetings “Digitalks” and by the recent publication of the volume “Interview with New Media Art. The Digicult observatory between art, design and digital culture” published by Marco Mancuso for Mimesis Edizioni in October 2020.
The meetings can be streamed on the mudaC Facebook page:
The project is promoted by the Municipality of Carrara and curated by the Director of mudaC Laura Barreca, in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara.
