[…] Precisely the valorization of Carrara’s identity characters and its relationship with marble is the main theme on which the city is working, highlighted by the two competitions announced in the last two years. In 2020, the competition (the first ever for the municipality) for the “Reuse and re-functionalization of the former marble railway’s seat track,” in order to create an equipped green axis combined with sustainable mobility, with a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting the former railway stations present upstream and downstream from the sea. In 2022, the international competition “New Ideas for Carrara and its Marble” (announced by the Carrara2030 Association) aimed at stimulating innovative entrepreneurial projects, dedicated to the reuse of marble derivatives, which will initiate the ecological transition of the stone sector for engineering, architecture, design and material technology works.
In addition, there is a great attention to the popularization of the role that marble has for this territory, demonstrated by three important interventions in recent years, such as the recovery, by Guido Canali, of the seventeenth-century Palazzo Pisani, for the realization of the Museum of the City of Marble; the redevelopment of Villa Fabbricotti to host the CARMI, an acronym for “Carrara and Michelangelo,” which from 2018 celebrates the link between the artist and the city of marble, his material of choice.
