Massa Carrara, in places where stones draw stories
On 23 January 2024, Il Sole 24 Ore online published an article on the New York Times’ choice to include the province of Massa Carrara in its list of destinations to visit in 2024.
The article, by Chiara Beghelli, underlines the role played in this choice by the prestigious American newspaper by the historical value of white Carrara marble as a material for shaping art.
After recalling the centuries-old activity of marble quarrying in the Apuan Alps and the ancient and modern trade of the quarryman, the article inevitably mentions the close link between this territory, marble and Michelangelo Buonarroti, thus recalling the same role played in art by the historic Carrara sculpture studios such as Studio Nicoli and its collaborations with artists of the calibre of: Mario Sironi, Mimmo Paladino, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Louise Bourgeois.
Lastly, the article mentions Lardo di Colonnata with its peculiar characteristic of being matured inside basins made of White Carrara Marble.
The final part of the article is dedicated to the natural beauty and landscape of the province of Massa Carrara.
