In Biella a stone in memory of the Fallen

A stone of Carrara marble engraved with the name of the City “CARRARA” and the number of its Fallen in the First World War, will enrich the vast pavement of stones “reuse” from all over Italy, already laid in the monumental area of Nuraghe Chervu on the outskirts of Biella from March 2019, in the context of national celebrations for the end of the conflict.

“We gladly collaborate with this idea that is launched to us by a creative city – comments the Mayor of Carrara Francesco De Pasquale – and that allows us to confirm and strengthen our role as a Creative City for marble processing, at the same time remembering a historical fact that has marked our community”.

“It is an interesting initiative – adds the sculptor Michele Monfroni – because this fragment of history is added to other fragments that allow us to reconstruct the period. They help us to remember in order not to forget”.

The historical memory linked to the Fallen of Carrara in the First World War has recently been enlivened in a book entitled “1000 are not back” written by Ezio della Mea and Enzo Menconi.
The authors have collected the names, the history of military life, the departments they belonged to and the circumstances of the death of more than 850 soldiers from Carrara and about 100 soldiers from other countries who died in the town’s military hospitals. This story has been reconstructed through many sources: memorial stones, stelae, civic monuments of the various hamlets of Carrara, tombstones, gravestones and cemetery registers.
